The Arizona Cardinals acquired Kenyan Drake a week ago, and three days later he was effectively their workhorse back. Injuries can create all sorts of crazy scenarios, but that Drake in Week 9 felt like a relatively unique situation.

The Cardinals were shorthanded because Chase Edmonds had injured his hamstring and David Johnson was still recovering from his ankle injury. They sent a conditional draft pick to the Miami Dolphins on Monday and quickly immersed him in the playbook — and things worked out pretty well.

Drake got the bulk of the workload on Thursday night en route to his best game of the year. Despite a tough match-up, Drake delivered 110 yards rushing, a touchdown and added four receptions for 52 yards. Johnson is expected back for Week 10 so usage will continue to be an issue for the Cardinals’ new addition.

Drake ($5,500) has been moved up to more expensive tier of running back even with a difficult game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the horizon. With David Johnson ($5,700) returning, Drake’s role going forward is uncertain and you may want to seek other options. The Buccaneers run defense has been one of the best in the league. Avoiding the Cardinals backfield until we see how each player is utilized is a wise move. Dropping down to Devin Singletary ($5,000) might be the better call given his last two performances.
