Patrick Mahomes injury status update 7:57 a.m.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is expected to sit in Week 9, missing his second straight start, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Mahomes is rehabbing his dislocated knee cap, and while he has returned to limited practice, he is not ready to go. The Chiefs activated Chad Henne off injured reserve, but Matt Moore will get the start.

There is some good news out of Kansas City this week. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes did practice, despite his knee injury. However, the team had him in a limited capacity, working with the second team while Matt Moore led the starters. Mahomes is officially listed as questionable this week, but as of Friday it seemed like he would sit against the Vikings.

Late Saturday afternoon, Ed Werder dropped in with quite the report. He tweeted that “there’s a chance” Mahomes would play on Sunday. It certainly could be possible, but “there’s a chance” seems a little weak for riding with that expectation.

Regardless, the fact that Moore practiced with the ones is the key takeaway here, because it looks like the team is more concerned about him being ready to lead the offense than they are trying to rush Mahomes back onto the field. Besides, the Chiefs have the luxury of taking their time with the starting QB and letting him get back to 100 percent. No other team in that division is a threat, and even with Moore under center for another week, they can keep pace with everyone else in the AFC except the Patriots.

Fantasy football analysis, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes

It is a hassle that they’re holding out the possibility he might play, because when he is in the lineup, he’s a must-start player. But it’s probably better to be safe than sorry in this instance.

Don’t overlook the fact that Moore put up a respectable effort in a close loss to the Packers last week. He threw two touchdowns, and was not intercepted. It helps when a backup has the kind of skill players around him that the Chiefs do. If Moore starts, he doesn’t significantly diminish the potential output from Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, and Sammy Watkins. With a DK league cost of $4,800, Moore has the potential to be a sneaky addition to your lineup in Week 9 too.
