What to do with Gardner Minshew in Week 9 fantasy football

After tossing three touchdowns against the Jets in Week 8, Gardner Minshew heads to London to take on the Texans. Is he worth starting? We investigate.

The ‘stache is back! After a couple down games, Gardner Minshew turned things back around, completing 22-of-34 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns against the Jets in Week 8. He also added 28 rushing yards and has hit that number in three of his last four games.

Minshew did lose another fumble last week, giving him five on the season, but three of those came in one game against the Panthers. For the most part, he’s been careful with the ball as a passer, throwing just two interceptions to 13 touchdowns passes while the Texans have only three interceptions total on the season.

Fantasy Football Analysis, Jacksonville Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew

The Texans have been giving to opposing quarterbacks this season, allowing the fifth-most fantasy points to the position. Over the last four weeks, they’ve given up lines of 285/3 to Derek Carr, 326/4 to Jacoby Brissett, 273/3/1 to Patrick Mahomes, and 330/3/1, 7/1 rushing to Matt Ryan. Minshew has faced the Texans already, in his first start of the year in Week 2. He didn’t set the world ablaze, completing 23-of-33 for 213 yards and a touchdown while rushing six times for 56 yards for a QB15 finish that week in Houston, but it was a positive game for him and his rushing helped him from being a complete dud.

Minshew could be without wide receiver Dede Westbrook, who had to leave last week’s game with a shoulder injury that has been bothering him for at least a couple of weeks. The good news is that Chris Conley has played as well or better than Westbrook with limited work and stepped up for a big game in Week 8 against the Jets after Westbrooks departure. Add in D.J. Chark and Leonard Fournette and Minshew should have enough weapons to stack up some stats.

Traditional Fantasy Start/Sit Recommendation

DraftKings DFS Recommendation

Minshew is $5,700 at DraftKings, the 16th most expensive quarterback on the slate. That’s a reasonable spot for him coming off one of the best games of his short career to face a weak pass defense. This is an early game in London, so if you want to play him, be sure to get your lineups in the night before so you can get a little rest before your tilt-a-thon.

I’m okay playing him in cash lineups in this matchup, but I’ll likely use him more in GPPs. Stacking Minshew with D.J. Chark ($6,500) and Chris Conley (4,000), if Westbrook is out, is an appealing start to lineup construction.
