The NFL kicks off Week 12 in a little over 24 hours, and that means it’s time for another look at how the betting public is approaching the full slate of NFL games. Some folks like to fade the public while others will roll with them, but either way it’s a helpful data point to consider when making your straight up and against the spread picks. All data is courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook.
Indianapolis and Houston square off on Thursday to open the week, and the splits are kind of fascinating right out of the gate. A slim majority of point spread bets are on the Colts, while a majority of the point spread handle is on the Texans. On the other hand, a sizable majority of money line tickets and handle are on the Colts. The Texans are a big enough favorite that I imagine money line bettors simply think there’s a little more value in picking the upset.
As of Wednesday morning, the Lions at -3.5 vs. Washington and the Ravens at -3 vs. the Rams are getting the most public backing. It’s interesting to note that both favorites are going on the road in these matchups. That Ravens-Rams split is notable given that prime time home underdogs can be particularly lively dogs.
We have one double digit favorite this week, with the Browns laying 10.5 against the Dolphins. 71 percent of tickets bet and 72 percent of the handle on the point spread are backing the Dolphins. Miami has been a live dog all season, so this is not surprising against a very shaky Browns squad.
