Callahan: Derrius Guice will get plenty of work this week, Chris Thompson still out

Head coach Bill Callahan said he expects Derrius Guice to get plenty of work in his return from injured reserve. We break down the fantasy football implications.

Washington is back from their bye, and they expected to welcome running back Derrius Guice back into action in Week 11. The team activated Guice off injured reserve during their Week 10 bye, and returned to practice on Wednesday. Head coach Bill Callahan told the media he is confident Guice, “will get plenty of work this week against the Jets, including some passing and screen game situations,” per beat writer JP Finlay.

In related news, Callahan said running back Chris Thompson is still out with his toe injury. He suffered a turf toe injury in Week 6 and has not played or practiced since.

Fantasy football analysis: RB Derrius Guice, Adrian Peterson

It’s going to be an interesting timeshare on Sunday against the Jets. In Week 1, Guice was the starter and Peterson was inactive. Guice tore his meniscus and surgery put him on IR. Peterson took over the starting role, while Thompson continued primarily with his passing down work.

With Thompson out, there is plenty of passing work for Guice. Wendell Smallwood will get some as well, but Guice is the guy they want to be their workhorse long-term. He’s struggled to remain healthy however. Peterson has been solid for stretches in Guice’s place, so expect him to be active vs. the Jets.

Who to start in fantasy is a tough one. It’s a solid matchup against a bad Jets defense, but we don’t know who will get work. I’d lean AP initially with Guice slowly worked back in, but your guess is as good as mine. Guice is probably not worth starting this week, but if you are shorthanded, at least you know he should be active.
