Washington head coach Bill Callahan announced that Dwayne Haskins will remain the starting quarterback the rest of the season. Haskins replaced an injured Case Keenum in two games, and then made his first start of the season in Week 9 before the team’s Week 10 bye.
Washington spent the 15th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft on Haskins, with the hope he could be their quarterback of the future. Alex Smith was sidelined at that point with his nasty broken leg, and it still seems unlikely he ever plays football again. The team acquired Case Keenum prior to the draft, but he was never more than a stop-gap measure.
Fantasy analysis
Haskins is a dynasty league option, but not even really a smaller keeper league play. He could turn into something and if you’ve got a roster spot in your keeper league, so be it. But Washington is not an ideal situation for anybody, so his own fantasy value is uncertain.
Washington is expecting running back Derrius Guice back this week, which is a big boost for Haskins and the offense. They’ll have Guice and Adrian Peterson, with Chris Thompson continuing to work back from a turf toe injury. The ground game will be critical to keeping Haskins in one piece.
Terry McLaurin and Paul Richardson offer some modest value, but neither is of great value right now in single season leagues. McLaurin got off to a strong start in his rookie season, but the past three games he’s had a total of nine receptions for 89 yards. He should remain on your bench until we see if he can return to his early season ways.
Sports betting analysis
If you bet the under on Washington’s win total (6), you’re in great shape. They’re 1-8 and I can’t imagine anybody sees them winning five more games the final seven games of their schedule.
Washington is actually a 1.5-point favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook this weekend when they host the New York Jets. Both teams stink, but I’m a little surprised by this line. Guice is a boost to the Washington offense, but I lean toward the Jets in this one.
