The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without running back Jaylen Samuels for the next month. Head coach Mike Tomlin announced on Tuesday that Samuels underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday and will be sidelined for the next month. The injury is something that has been a problem since prior to Week 5, according to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero.
Samuels has 50 rushing yards and one touchdown on 18 carries and 83 receiving yards on 13 receptions through five weeks. Benny Snell, Jr. moves into a backup role behind James Conner until Samuels returns.
Fantasy football analysis, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jaylen Samuels
Expectations grew for Samuels heading into the 2019 season, but he has been an inconsistent fantasy option. He got extensive gadget work on Monday Night Football against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4, finishing with 26 rushing yards and a touchdown to go along with eight receptions for 57 yards. He followed that up with three rushes for two yards and three receptions for 11 yards against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5.
He was not a viable fantasy option prior to the injury, and is even less of an option while we wait for him to get healthy. He was a handcuff for Conner, but with Conner healthy — albeit a little dinged up — Samuels is nothing more than a handcuff when he returns from the knee injury.
