Editor’s update 9:45 p.m.: Good news out of Pittsburgh. Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph went to the hospital after his scary hit, and he was allowed to go home Sunday evening, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Rudolph suffered a concussion on a big hit by Ravens safety Earl Thomas, and appeared to be knocked out with the hit. He has entered the concussion protocol, and will process through it over the coming days or longer. To be cleared for football activities, he has to be asymptomatic at rest and then after exertion. He’ll begin that process this week.
Editor’s update 5:00 p.m.: Rookie quarterback Devlin Hodges replaced Mason Rudolph after his scary injury, and completed seven of nine passes for 68 yards and scrambled for 20 more yards. The Steelers drove down for a James Conner rushing touchdown on Hodges’ first drive. They were off to a solid start in OT when JuJu Smith-Schuster fumbled the ball after catching a 10-yard pass from Hodges. Baltimore took over and kicked a game-winning field goal four plays later.
Editor’s update 3:20 p.m.: The Steelers responded in impressive fashion following Mason Rudolph’s scary head injury. Devlin Hodges came on the field to replace Rudolph and the Steelers marched 47 yards for a go-ahead touchdown. Hodges completed two of three passes for 27 yards and running back James Conner punched in the touchdown to give Pittsburgh a 20-17 lead in the third quarter.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph suffered a scary looking injury in the third quarter of Week 5. While scrambling and throwing the ball, he was sandwiched between two Ravens defenders and appeared to get knocked out before he hit the ground. You can watch the video here, but be warned it’s a scary look as Rudolph goes down.
Rudolph regained consciousness as trainers worked with him. He was able to get up with the assistance of the staff and walk off the field with their help. Devlin Hodges has come on in place of Rudolph.
This whole situation went from scary to absurd when the Steelers had to walk him off the field instead of using their training cart. It broke down and the trainers assisted Rudolph to the locker room.
The Steelers announced Rudolph will not return due to a concussion.
