The New York Giants have seen Daniel Jones put together a solid start to his career through two weeks. They’ve won both games, and he has put up some solid numbers — even with some hiccups. The degree of difficulty increases in Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings, and Jones will not get back second-year star running back Saquon Barkley for the game. The Giants formally ruled out Barkley on Friday.
Barkley suffered a high ankle sprain during Jones’ debut in Week 3, and has been working to get back faster than the four-to-eight week timeline that has been discussed. He has been showing progress in his rehab work, but he remains sidelined from team drills.
Fantasy football analysis, New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley
Barkley has pushed to beat the four-to-eight week timeline, but even if he returns in Week 7, he’ll be at the quicker end of it. The Giants have won two straight, but given the strength of those opponents, it’s too early to decide how for real this is. Having Barkley against the Vikings would help give them a better barometer, but there’s no reason to push too fast. If Daniel Jones is for real, even if they drop the next to against the Vikings and Patriots, they’ll be 2-4 and in a solid enough position moving forward.
In the meantime, Wayne Gallman remains the team’s starter. He had a solid performance against Washington, netting 118 total yards and two touchdowns. Minnesota will give us a better idea of just what to make of him along with Jones.
