Worst defense DFS plays for Week 5

Highlighting the worst values at D/ST on the DraftKings Week 5 main slate

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller (58) celebrates his 100th career sack at Empower Field at Mile High.

I think there are a lot of great D/ST options on the Week 5 DraftKings slate, and they land in different price ranges. That means the majority of the D/ST options will be a fade for me, outside of the four in my top D/ST article.

It’s worth mentioning that I learned something new this week. I’ve been covering NFL slate on DraftKings since 2015, and didn’t know a D/ST could be priced below $2,000. The Redskins check in at $1,800 agains the Patriots this week, but are still an easy fade.

Here are my three least favorite D/ST plays on the 12-game main slate. All prices via DraftKings.

Broncos (@LAC) — $2,900

It’s time to completely give up on the Broncos D/ST. It came into 2019 with so much hype — a unit led by Von Miller and Bradley Chubb, with a strong secondary and Vic Fangio coming on board to coach the team.

Through three weeks it had posted zeros across the boards. Literally, no turnovers, no sacks and 1.0 total DKFP. The Broncos did manage five sacks for 5.0 DKFP against Jacksonville in Week 4, but lost Chubb for the season. This defense is a complete bust, and puts up no numbers to give us fantasy points.

Cardinals (@CIN) — $2,900

Don’t overreact to what we saw on MNF from the Bengals. Yes, it looked terrible, but the Cardinals D/ST presents the perfect bounce-back spot for the Bengals. The Cardinals average just 3.3 DKFP per game, and has scored just 6.0 total DKFP in the last three weeks combined.

The only upside here is that the Bengals have a terrible offensive line, and Arizona has at least two sacks in each game. But the defense hasn’t forced an interception all season, and the oppositions scored at leas 23 points in each game. Target offense in this game, but other than a couple of sacks, don’t chase after a defense just for its matchup against Cincinnati. That would be a big overreaction to MNF.

Falcons (@HOU) — $2,500

Targeting against the Texans is a popular option, as Deshaun Watson has been one of the most sacked QBs, and the offensive line in Houston is in shambles. The cheap salary on Atlanta may catch your eye, but don’t let it sway you towards rostering it.

The Falcons D/ST averages 2.8 DKFP, and essentially got all its production in Week 2 against the Eagles (10 DKFP). It has scores just 1.0 DKFP total in each of the three other games. The defense has just five sacks, and has forced three turnovers. There’s zero upside here.
