Sam Darnold ruled out for Week 5 due to enlarged spleen

Jets QB Sam Darnold will get another week to reduce the size of his enlarged spleen. We break down the fantasy football implications.

The New York Jets announced on Friday that quarterback Sam Darnold is officially ruled out for Week 5 vs. the Philadelphia Eagles. Darnold has been recovering from a mono diagnosis, and had started to get in some limited work at practice. There was thought he might be ready to go this week, but then we heard this kicker of a quotation from him.

“It’s a tough thing because you want to stay safe,” he said Thursday. “I want to make sure that I’m safe out there and I’m not going to die.”

Mono results in an enlarged spleen, and if it remains enlarged, a bad hit can actually lead to death. There was talk of him getting it checked out and if it was no longer enlarged he might play. The team likely ran an ultrasound and blood test to determine if it had returned to its normal state, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

It’s safe to say that for most of us, this is probably the most we have heard about the spleen.

Fantasy football analysis, New York Jets QB Sam Darnold

At some point Darnold will return, and he should provide a boost to the Jets offense. In the meantime, the Jets will continue rolling out Luke Faulk in hopes that he can create a miracle. Aside from Le’Veon Bell, it’s hard to find much justification for starting anybody else on this offense in fantasy football.

In their last game prior to the bye, Braxton Berrios led the team with two receptions for 29 yards. More notable names like Jamison Crowder (two receptions, 25 yards) and Robby Anderson (three receptions, 11 yards) did not have much to offer. I can’t see any reason to start any of them.
