Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert injury status update
49ers running backs Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert have both been designated as questionable for Week 9 Thursday Night Football. Kyle Shanahan thinks they’ll play, but it will depend on how they feel Thursday morning after flying down Wednesday night. If both play, Breida will be ahead of Mostert on the depth chart.
The San Francisco 49ers have a banged up backfield, but they’re hoping to have their full contingent of running backs available for Week 9 Thursday Night Football against the Arizona Cardinals. Running back Matt Breida injured his ankle in Week 8 and Raheem Mostert injured his knee in the game, and both were limited participants in Tuesday’s practice. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said if the game was that day they wouldn’t play, but he was optimistic about their chances on Wednesday.
Tevin Coleman is the team’s starter, with Jeff Wilson serving as a short-yardage back. Coleman is healthy and coming off a four-touchdown performance against the Carolina Panthers in Week 8. Wilson suffered a stinger but was not on the Tuesday injury report.
Fantasy football analysis: 49ers RBs Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert
Coleman is a must start this week in fantasy football, but then it becomes a little dicier. Breida is ahead of Mostert on the depth chart, so he’s the pick in that situation if you have to start one of them. But ideally you find some better options. Breida’s ankle has been a problem off and on the past two seasons, so an aggravation would not be a shocking development.
Mostert is available in 7.6 percent of leagues, but he is only roster-able if he is the backup or starter. For the time being that’s not the case, so unless you have space for a handcuff you’re unlikely to use, he’s worth avoiding on the waiver wire.
