Cardinals acquire Kenyan Drake in trade with Dolphins

The Cardinals need depth, and they’ve added it before the trade deadline.

The Arizona Cardinals lost running back Chase Edmonds to a hamstring injury on Sunday, and with David Johnson also out with an ankle injury, they’ve made a trade to shore up their depth. The team is sending a conditional 2020 draft pick to the Miami Dolphins for running back Kenyan Drake, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The pick is a 2020 sixth round pick that could become a fifth depending on performance.

For the season, Drake has rushed 47 times for 174 yards (3.7 yards per carry) and caught 22 passes for 174 yards. He has yet to find the end zone and has one lost fumble.

Fantasy football analysis, Cardinals RB Kenyan Drake

This is a big boost for the Cardinals the rest of the season, but in the short term, this is a tough turnaround for Drake. He’ll face a 49ers defense that has been fairly dominant against the run, giving up the second fewest fantasy points to the running back position. Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey had a big game against the 49ers with 117 rushing yards on Sunday, but the Panthers also got pummeled in that game.

If you’re shorthanded with all the byes this week, Drake is worth considering. However, expectations should be low given he is new to the offense and facing one of the best defenses in the NFL. I’d avoid starting him if you can, but if you’re desperate, at least you know he’ll be getting plenty of touches.
