David Johnson not practicing to start Week 8, Cardinals sign two running backs

Cardinals running back David Johnson is a question mark a few days after Arizona pulled an okey doke on fantasy owners. We break down the fantasy football implications of the latest news heading into Week 8.

The Arizona Cardinals pissed off a lot of fantasy football owners in Week 7 when Chase Edmonds ended up replacing David Johnson in the starting lineup — but only after Johnson was announced as active and played three snaps. Edmonds dominated with three touchdowns, but most people had started Johnson instead.

It’s hard to know what to make of things in Week 8, but we have some hints that David Johnson might not play. Johnson did not practice on Wednesday, according to beat writer Darren Urban. Additionally, the team signed running backs Alfred Morris and Zach Zenner on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told the media he still wants to see where Johnson is at the end of the week.

Well, this will be another fun week. The Cardinals play in the early time slot, but given what happened last week, would an active status for Johnson actually tell us anything? The one upside is that the Saints are great against the run, giving up the fourth fewest fantasy points to running backs. If Johnson is inactive, you start Edmonds. If Johnson is active, it almost might be worth sitting both since a) we might not know who will get what snaps and b) the Saints defense is strong against running backs.

It’s not the best solution, but it’s what we’re left with in light of the Cardinals situation.
