Editor’s update 1:44 p.m.: Money came in Monday morning and has resulted in Russell Wilson moving slightly ahead of Patrick Mahomes in the MVP race. Wilson is now the slim favorite at +220, followed by Mahomes at +225, and then DeShaun Watson still at +500.
The NFL has one more game to go to wrap up Week 6, but in the meantime, how about Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson? Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes gets plenty of well-earned publicity, but it’s Wilson who might walk away with the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award this season.
The Seahawks are 5-1, a half game back of the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West, and Wilson is the reason. On Sunday, he completed 70 percent of his passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 31 yards and another touchdown to lead Seattle to a comeback victory against the Cleveland Browns.
Wilson is having the best season of his impressive career. He has completed 72.5 percent of his passes, easily surpassing his previous career high of 68.1 percent. He’s also on pace for career highs in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and rushing touchdowns. Oh, and he has yet to throw an interception!
It’s no surprise then that Wilson has joined Patrick Mahomes as co-leader in the MVP odds at DraftKings Sportsbook. Wilson entered Week 6 having improved from +1600 to +700. After the win over Cleveland, Wilson improved to +200. Mahomes sits there as well, while DeShaun Watson has also shot up the leaderboard from +2500 two weeks ago to +1400 last week to +500 now.
Watson got the boost after a strong performance against the Chiefs in a big road upset. Watson threw two interceptions, but rushed for a pair of scores in the comeback victory. Mahomes had a solid day of his own, but the ankle injury he suffered against the Colts seems to be bothering him to some degree. He’s putting up massive numbers, but something still seems a little bit off.
Week 7 brings some huge matchups for the MVP favorites. The Seahawks host the 4-2 Baltimore Ravens, the Chiefs travel to face the 2-4 Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football, and the Texans travel to face the 3-2 Indianapolis Colts. Quarterback wins should not be a real thing, but if one more of these teams lose — regardless of how the quarterbacks perform — MVP odds will suffer.
