Cardinals encouraged by David Johnson Week 6 rehab progress [UPDATE]

Cardinals running back David Johnson is reportedly making progress in his rehab from a back injury. We still don’t know his status for Week 6, which raises questions about Chase Edmonds value. We break down the fantasy football implications.

Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury met with the media on Friday and told them that David Johnson and Christian Kirk are both game-time decisions for Week 6, according to team reporter Darren Urban. Johnson told the media that he is good to go for the Falcons game.

Good news for David Johnson fantasy owners, not so good news for Chase Edmonds fantasy owners. The Cardinals returned to practice on Friday, and Johnson was going through stretches and receiver drills in the open portion, according to ESPN reporter Josh Weinfuss.

Johnson had missed Wednesday and Thursday practices with a back injury, so getting back on the field on Friday bodes well for his chances of playing on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. If Johnson is active, he is an RB1. If he’s active, Edmonds is downgraded to the bench unless you are in a particularly deep league or dealing with an unusual amount of injury and bye week issues.

The Arizona Cardinals head into the weekend unsure about running back David Johnson’s status for Week 6 vs. the Atlanta Falcons. Johnson has sat out the first two days of practice heading into Friday, but general manager Steve Keim is encouraged with how Johnson has progressed this week. He told the team’s website he talked to Johnson on Thursday and is encouraged by Johnson’s rehab. Keim said, “I think he feels pretty good. I’m not 100 percent sure, but I certainly am encouraged.”

Fantasy football analysis, Cardinals RB David Johnson

If you were hoping that Chase Edmonds lottery ticket would pay off, you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer. Johnson will likely be listed as questionable and a game-time decision.

The Cardinals do not play until 4:05 p.m. ET, so you might be stuck in a difficult situation. If you have Edmonds and Johnson you’re fine — both are solid starts against the Falcons. If you have Edmonds but not Johnson, he still might be a decent flex option if you’re dealing with bye week and/or injury absences. If you have Johnson but not Edmonds, ideally Ian Rapoport or Adam Schefter offer some clear optimism or pessimism Sunday morning so you can finalize a decision by 1:00 p.m. kickoffs.
